Livigno (Italy) (AFP) – US Olympic snowboard champion Chloe Kim said Thursday she was proud to represent a country that is “strongest when it embraces diversity, dignity, and hope” as she arrived at the Milan-Cortina Winter Games. Kim is aiming for a third straight halfpipe gold after finishing top of the podium in Pyeongchang in 2018 and in Beijing in 2022.

In a post on Instagram, Kim took apparent aim at President Donald Trump’s divisive immigration crackdown in the United States, highlighting her family story. “I can’t believe I’ve arrived in Milan to represent my country at the Olympic Games for the third time,” said the 25-year-old. “If you told little me that, she wouldn’t believe you. This one feels especially meaningful for so many reasons.”

“My parents left South Korea in search of a better future for their family. They left behind everything they knew so that my sisters and I could have the chance to one day live the American dream.” Kim said she would never take that sacrifice for granted. “So when I stand at the top of the halfpipe, competing on the biggest stage in sport, I do so with immense pride,” she added. “I am representing my country but I am also representing those who took a leap of faith, who came to this beautiful nation carrying hopes, dreams, and courage.”

“I am proud of my heritage. I am proud of my journey. And I am proud to represent a country that is strongest when it embraces diversity, dignity, and hope. GO TEAM USA!!”

The fatal shootings of two protesters by federal officers in Minneapolis last month sparked widespread outrage in the United States and calls for an end to immigration raids in the Midwestern city. The president suggested Wednesday that a “softer touch” may be needed on immigration, as his administration said 700 federal officers would be pulled from Minnesota but that mass deportations would not stop.

Qualifying for the women’s halfpipe competition is scheduled to take place in Livigno on February 11, with the final set for the following day.
