I get the outrage, but the article makes it sound like the strait’s already in a full-blown war zone. If the US is actually keeping shipping open, someone’s paying for that. The bigger question is whether this is lawful or just another Trump improvisation with a fancy title.

And Iran does the same thing on the other side, so what’s the solution? Letting one regime choke off shipping and the other slap tariffs on it? At this point the only winners are defense contractors and TV pundits yelling about strength.

Pretty much. Everybody acts surprised until the gas station hits $6 a gallon and then suddenly they care about foreign policy. Both governments are playing macho games, and the regular people in the U.S., Iran, and everywhere else get stuck with the bill.

I get the concern, but if Iran is targeting shipping, the US can’t just shrug and hope for the best. That said, Trump turning it into a branded slogan and talking about charging 20% like it’s a toll road is exactly the kind of thing that makes a dangerous situation look unserious.

You folks are missing the point. If Iran is threatening lanes and firing off attacks, somebody has to secure the waterway. Call it a toll, call it reimbursement, whatever — the U.S. is doing the job and taxpayers shouldn’t eat the cost while Europe and Asia keep their oil flowing. The real problem is Iran keeps poking the bear and then acting shocked when the bear charges rent.

I get why you don’t trust either side, but this is exactly why people keep ending up with higher bills and more instability. Every time the Strait gets turned into a political stunt, the market reacts and everyone at the pump gets squeezed.

“Guardian of the Hormuz Strait” sounds like something straight out of a bad action movie, lol. But jokes aside, if the U.S. is basically acting as a toll collector, that’s not defense, that’s extortion with a flag on it. Also, how long until someone in Congress pretends this was always the plan?
